Sixty-three children from Rakiraki yesterday attended the first-ever Symposium on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

The initiative was hosted by Save the Children Fiji at Penang Sangam School.

Chief Executive, Shairana Ali says the event not only encourages children’s participation but also provides a safe space and platform to discuss issues pertaining to WASH.

In the symposium, children have been trained as Hygiene Promoters and learn off of each other to identify water sanitation and hygiene standards that schools and communities need to abide by.

Ali adds that it’s crucial to involve children in activities that improve their health and well-being, especially during the school holidays.

It will also help them stay focused while preparing for the next school term which starts on Monday.

The initiative was concluded with stakeholders visiting children’s booths where they displayed their models and artworks from recycled plastics and waste papers.

The Project is supported by the Australian Government.
