The best in livestock, crops, agricultural equipment and technology are being showcased at the Central Agriculture show underway in Nausori.
The much anticipated event was opened by Assistant Agriculture Minister Viam Pillay at Syria Park today.
Pillay says under the national climate action plan and through climate smart agriculture, Fiji’s pledged to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 as well cut overall emissions from its energy sector by 30 percent.
“Interestingly, Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use activities also generate or contribute to greenhouse gas. FAO has stated that these activities can contribute around 21 percent of such emissions globally. Therefore, it is appropriate that agriculture limit its impact on climate by ensuring that agricultural practices are climate-smart.”
The theme for the show is Climate Smart agriculture Fiji.
Three provinces, namely Rewa, Tailevu and Naitasiri will participate in the three day show with farmers competing for awards of the best in various categories.
The Agriculture show which is open to the public will close on Friday.
