Car dealers bringing in cars that are more than four years old

Many car dealers in Fiji are bringing in cars that are more than four years old.

Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says government is trying to encourage these dealers to bring in newer cars in order for them to pay less duty.

“Many of the car dealers were bringing in cares that were four years eleven months, four years and ten months. They would also be cheaper and of course they charge huge margin for that. So what we want to do is to encourage them to bring in new cars because we are saying if you bring in new cars that are two years or younger then instead of paying 32% you pay 15% duty.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says this will ensure that Fijians actually purchase new cars.
The Minister was speaking at a national budget roadshow for tertiary students at the Fiji National University’s Derrick Campus in Suva yesterday.
