Women’s representation on Boards of publicly listed companies should be legislated.
The Women In Business organization presented this in its submission on the proposed Companies Bill before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights.
WIB Director Dr Nur Bano Ali is calling for the inclusion of a gender quota.
“Women in Business was highlighting 2 main issues, 1 was the definition of the private company and the problematic nature of lumping small and large companies altogether and the reporting requirements that go with that and the other thing that we, issue that we have is that we need women representation on boards legislated.”
Dr Ali says there is a need to include a 4th category for businesses which include companies that make less than a million dollars as well as to clearly outline the reporting requirements for private companies.
The public submissions are expected to conclude next week with committee to finalize their report prior to May’s Parliament sitting.
