The Fiji Sugar Corporation will soon be distributing cage bins to the sugar mills.

This is being done to reduce transportation cost for farmers and maximize sugar production.

FSC’s Chief Operating Officer, Navin Chandra says they trialed 20 cage bins in Lautoka last year and it worked perfectly.

Chandra says they have 40 more cage bins that were given by the European Union to be utilized and will be distributed to other sugar mills.

Chandra adds the FSC is also looking at ways to improve its railway network.

Previously, 80 per cent of cane taken to the mills were delivered by rail, however, this was not the case in 2016 as only 20 percent was delivered.

Chandra says their aim is to get at least 60 percent of cane delivered by rail.
