Bulitavu labels national budget irresponsible

June 17, 2019 4:25 pm

Opposition Member Mosese Bulitavu claims the 2019/2020 national budget is irresponsible and it will constrain the government’s service delivery.

Bulitavu claims the cut down in the allocation to various ministries will lead to more poor and incomplete services, therefore he doesn’t support the budget.

Speaking in Parliament this afternoon, Bulitavu asked for a performance audit on the amount of money spent on the Tropical Cyclone Winston Rehabilitation program.

He says there are still children studying under tents.

“We need to find out which business really benefitted from what the people of grassroots level call as a step. Some people still have not rebuilt their homes, children are still intent classrooms.”

Education Minister, Rosy Akbar refuted the claims made by Bulitavu, saying he was misleading the people of Fiji.

“I can assure the house to date since the beginning of the school year we have had no child studying under a tent anywhere across the country. It’s a lie and the intention behind that statement from honourable Bulitavu I am not sure but of course, it is there to mislead people.”

The government has spent over $200m to rehabilitate all schools damaged by TC Winston.

The Minister says a school-wide infrastructure audit is now underway.
