September 28, 2018 2:01 am

Twenty families living in squatter settlements in Bulileka, Labasa today received their 99 year lease titles from the government for the land they have been residing on.

Handing over the documents this morning, Lands Minister, Faiyaz Koya says the leases are for both agricultural and residential purpose.

Koya says the lease documents give the squatters security of tenure.

This means that lease title holders can resort to financial borrowing from banks and build houses or start-up businesses.

The families have been living in the squatter area for decades.
