Mothers and young women around the country have been encouraged to utilize the screening services at the CWM Hospital in Suva to detect cancer and save lives.
Health Ministry’s Acting Permanent Secretary Mecuisela Tuicakau says breast cancer is becoming a worry.
Tuicakau says breast cancer cases have increased in the past twenty-years.
“Therefore there needs to be a strong advocacy for self-examination and self-ownership of health, the community should have faith and trust in our health system, it is this fear that sometimes forces our community to force other forms of treatment or healers before they reach our door.”
Tuicakau adds the latest case is a 17 year old teenager.
There were 20 cases of breast cancer recorded in women under the age of 30.
