Bangladeshi National commits suicide in Fijian custody

A Bangladesh National has died at a detention center in Suva.

Police have confirmed that Mamtazul Hoque committed suicide yesterday morning at the Domain Detention Centre in Suva.

Hoque was detained by immigration authorities on Tuesday for violating the terms of his student visa and was due to be deported to Bangladesh this week.

He was 33 and had been in the country since 2009 on a student visa to study at the Fiji National University.

Police have contacted Bangladesh authorities, and Hoque’s next of kin have been notified.
