Bainimarama to commission more reconstructed school blocks

July 25, 2017 12:33 am

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will open seventeen new classroom buildings that the government has rebuilt and upgraded.

Schools such as Dobuilevu Muslim School, Tataiya Primary School and Naseyani Primary School in Rakiraki were badly devastated by TC Winston last year.

Bainimarama says none of these school projects were simple and they have all been reconstructed to a far higher standard.

Bainimarama adds the buildings are now more resilient to the severe effects of climate change.

“The reality is there is considerable work to be done to prepare ourselves for what is to come. 95% of the schools we are rebuilding from cyclone Winston were built with structurally approved plans, leaving our students vulnerable to climate related catastrophe .We can’t afford to rebuild to that standard because to do so we would stick us in a costly cycle of rebuilding year after year and put the lives of our students at risk.”

Baininmarama says the new classroom buildings have been constructed in a way which can withstand the force of a cyclone.
