Bainimarama to attend PIF meeting in Tuvalu

February 4, 2019 8:26 am

After more than a decade, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will be attending the Pacific Islands Forum meeting.

Scheduled for later this year, Bainimarama will not only be attending the forum, but he has also put out an offer for Fiji to host the next PIFs summit in 2021.

Fiji was suspended from the Forum in 2009 and since then relations have been strained despite the official reinstatement in 2014.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s visit last month appears to have triggered more cordial relations.

Bainimarama says the focus now will be to wait for the official program before Fiji decides on their agenda going forward.

“I will be attending the Pacific Islands Forum in Tuvalu. Yes, that’s in the program and No, we’ll have to wait until the agenda comes out before we discuss anything.”

The 50th PIF’s Leaders meeting will be held in Tuvalu while Vanuatu is set to host the meeting in 2020.
