FijiFirst Leader Voreqe Bainimarama has for the first time ever revealed events that took place post the 2000 coup and reasons why he took over the SDL government in 2006.

Bainimarama made this revelations while speaking at a campaign meeting in Tailevu last night.

Bainimarama who was then Commander of the RFMF says he appointed the interim government after the coup and this included Laisenia Qarase and Ro Teimumu Kepa.

He says he was persuaded by some senior officers to be part of the interim government but he refused.

Bainimarama says majority of the interim government members later formed the Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua party which formed government after it won the 2001 election.

However, after the election Bainimarama says the RFMF saw that SDL wasn’t deviating from creating religious and ethnic differences- which were the same issues that led to the events of 1987 and 2000.

He adds he was forced to persuade the Military to take over the SDL government and completely change the political landscape due to the rising tension of racial divisions in the country.

Bainimarama says his vision to unite every race and religion in Fiji still lives on today adding he will ensure that political upheavals of the past will not happen again.
