BAF refutes claims by FFPEA

Fresh produce exports continue as normal despite claims by the Fiji Fresh Produce Exporters Association (FFPEA) that its members have ceased exporting from last Wednesday.

BAF Executive Chairman Xavier Riyaz Khan has refuted claims by FFPEA that Fiji is losing a million dollars a week as a result of halt in exports by members of FFPEA.

FFPEA president, Rizwan Khan, last week claimed that export of all fruits, vegetable and root crops will not continue as the association is not happy with some of BAF’s new regulations.

Khan claims BAF records reveal that from last Wednesday nine fresh produce exporters, out of which two are members of FFPEA, have been exporting normally.

He says FFPEA should stop misleading the Fijians by claiming that fresh produce exporters have ceased exports since last Wednesday.

Khan adds it is a normal practice for exporters to take a break during Christmas holidays and FFPEA should stop misleading by giving out inaccurate information to media and to the Fijians.

He says BAF will revert to the required sample sized based inspection once the farmers and the exporters at the pack houses have implemented accepted level of compliance and with consultation with the importing country.
