A baby today celebrated her first birthday in prison.

Esther Ratumaiyali is one of two babies at the Women’s Correction Centre in Suva whose first birthday was celebrated at the corrections centre by the inmates and prison officers.

Her 34 year old mum, Merewalesi Baleiniusiladi, is serving a life sentence.

She says this might be the only birthday she is celebrating with her daughter as her baby will not be allowed to stay with her after six months.

According to her, the baby will then be looked after by her grandmother.

Baleiniusiladi says she wishes that there was a second chance for her.

Her sentence will end in 2022 and by then her daughter will be 11 years old.
