Awareness needed for Accident Compensation Commission: A-G

June 22, 2018 7:12 pm

Distributing cheques to those family members who have lost their loved ones during motor-vehicle accidents is not fanfare, instead it is to raise awareness on the work of the Accident Compensation Commission.

Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says many people in Fiji are not aware of the scheme thus more awareness is needed.

Sayed-Khaiyum says previously Fijians have lost out and the Government is working towards changing this.

“We want more Fijians to be aware of the fact that there is a compensation scheme in place. A compensation scheme that is more consumer friendly, user friendly, it has rules of equity built into it, it is just.”

He says there is a no fault scheme as well whereby people don’t really need to prove that they were not at fault to get compensation.

He says the compensation is not only for death but also applicable in cases of injury.
