Awareness campaigns on Kawakawa/Donu to be strengthened

February 16, 2018 5:12 am

There should be more awareness campaigns on the complete ban of harvesting and consumption of Kawakawa and Donu.

Currently Fijians only made voluntary pledges to not eat the two fish species during its breeding season, however it was not very effective.

Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau says despite numerous campaigns Fijians are still found harvesting the fish species.

Koroilavesau says campaigns need to be strengthened to ensure Fijians understand and know the importance of such ban to preserve our fishing stocks.

“The government is not doing this just to make their life difficult but it is for reason so that this resources are sustainable going forward into the future.”

The Fisheries Ministry will for the first time put a total ban on the consumption, harvesting and export of Kawakawa and Donu fish.

The ban will come with heavy penalties which has been drafted and forwarded to the Solicitor General’s office for verification.
