Australian student drowns in Fiji

An 18-year-old Australian student who was part of the schoolies group on holiday at Plantation Island Resort drowned in the early hours of this morning.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro has confirmed the incident saying investigations are ongoing into the circumstances.

The student was a part of a group of 523 holidaying in the country.

A statement from the Ministry of Information says the government extends its sympathy to the family deceased.

Tourism permanent secretary, Elizabeth Powell says it’s a terrible tragedy and thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Powell says the Government stands ready to assist the family in whatever way it can.

The Australian High Commission in Suva has informed the family of the deceased on this incident and necessary arrangements are being carried out.
