Australian couple facing drug related charges trial to begin next year

The Australian couple who allegedly imported cocaine, methamphetamine, arms and ammunition will be trialled in January next year.

Yvette and John Nikolic were charged after drugs, arms and ammunition were found on their yacht on June 22nd this year in Denaru, Nadi.

The duo are jointly charged with one count of possession of illicit drugs and one count of failure to declare arms and ammunition to a custom’s officer, while John is additionally charged with one count of unlawful importation of illicit drugs.

It’s alleged that John Nikolic imported 12.9 kilograms of cocaine and the couple had in their possession 34.4 grams of methamphetamine and cocaine tablets with an estimated value of between $20 and $30 million.

It’s also alleged that they failed to declare, they had in their possession one 9 millimetre Smith and Wesson pistol with 62 rounds of ammunition and one revolver with 41 rounds of ammunition.

Prosecution today informed the High court that they will be calling in seven witnesses while the Defense will be calling in two witnesses.

The one week trial will begin on 28th January next year.

Both have been remanded in custody.
