Australia vows support for 2018 General Election

The Australian government has welcomed the announcement of Fiji’s General Election which takes place on November 14th.

At the invitation of the Fiji Government, Australia will co-lead the Multinational Observer Group, alongside India and Indonesia, as they did in 2014.

In a statement, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Marise Payne, says Australia will be represented on the Multinational Observer Group by a bipartisan group of Australian parliamentarians, as well as experts and officials.

She adds the group will monitor processes from pre-election preparations, through the campaign period, to the announcement of official results.

Australia’s role as co-lead of the MOG is part of its broader partnership with Fiji.
The Minister says this is in addition to the ongoing support for the Electoral Commission and Fijian Elections Office through two long-term advisers.

The Australian Electoral Commission is also providing ongoing technical assistance.
