Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says they are ready to work with whoever wins the election in Fiji.

According to Sky News, Bishop says Australia will work closely with them to continue to normalise relations.

However, she says there is a long way to go before Australia can fully restore ties with Fiji, saying democracy is more than just holding an election.

Bishop says the outcome of the election has been ‘very positive’ but the process of rebuilding trust would take time.

She told reporters in Sydney yesterday, there is a great deal for Australia to achieve but the first step is to ensure that the election meets international expectations.’

Bishop says there is ‘quite a menu of matters’ that needs to be addressed before Fiji would be fully embraced by Australia.
