The Australian Government has congratulated the FijiFirst party for its win of the 2018 General Election.

Australian High Commissioner to Fiji John Feakes says he expects his government will make several announcements soon in terms of development cooperation, continuing to strengthen the Fiji Australia relationship.

The High Commissioner also notes that despite the torrential downpour and the suspension of polling on the Election Day, voter turnout has been impressive.

“Turnout seems to be quite high at 72 percent despite the weather and as the Multinational Observer Group made clear on Friday, the conduct of the Election was free, fair and credible so a great testament to the work of the Fijian Elections Office and obviously I’d like to congratulate the government for being returned. We look forward to working closely with the government over the next four years and I’m sure there’ll be some official announcements from my government shortly.”

Australia is one of three key parties in the Multinational Observer Mission which they co-lead along with India and Indonesia.
