August visitor numbers up

Provisional visitor numbers for last month totaled about 73-thousand and this is an increase of five-point three per cent compared to a year earlier.

The Bureau of Statistics reports increases in visitors from China, New Zealand and Pacific Islands.

However, there were decreases from Australia, Canada and Japan.

About 58-thousand visitors came for a holiday while the rest came to visit families and friends and for business purposes.

The majority of visitors in August were between the ages of 25 and 84.

In the twelve months ending August 2015, the total number of visitors increased by eight-point-three per cent.

There were more visitors from China and South Korea.
