Around 100 trucks carting water to dry areas

Around one hundred trucks are carting water to affected areas in the western division as the prolonged dry spell continues.

Water Authority’s Chief Executive Opetaia Ravai says thousands of Fijians are affected by the dry spell.

He says water is carted every day in the affected areas including households without a piped water supply.

He adds that areas like Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki have not received substantial amount of rain for some time now.

“We get continuous requests for areas we never used to go before, the wells and the rural sources are drying up and we are now experiencing the same problem in some parts of the Northern division.”

The Fiji Meteorological Office says the dry weather is expected to ease by next month.

Director, Ravind Kumar says most areas in the west will experience rain this weekend which will be a slight relief however more rainfall is expected from next month.
