Aquaculture is the best solution to ensuring Fiji’s demand for seafood is met and wild species continue to be a significant source.

Principal Fisheries Officer, Shalendra Singh says aquaculture is now the fastest food producing sector in the world.

He says there’s a lot of threat to the marine ecosystem now compared to previous years, including climate change, pollution and various illegal activities.

“This is causing a lot of pressure for natural fish to live in the sea. But we still have to eat because our population is increasing. So in order for us to fill the gap on the demand for food fish – we have to take up aquaculture very seriously because it’s the solution to meeting the demand for food fish in Fiji.”

The Ministry of Fisheries says Fiji’s population is almost reaching the one million mark and aquaculture is one way to address food security issues.
