Almost one in every two students face iron deficiency and around sixty percent of children under the age of five are anemic.

This was revealed by the Health and Medical Services following a National Nutrition Survey carried out earlier this year.

Health Minister Rosy Akbar says if people are not cautious anemia can cause serious health problems for these children in the future.

“Obviously people would know that when you are anemic it comes with fatigue, people are tired it affects our physical and Cognitive development and it does affects our children’s ability to perform well at school.”

Akbar says there are short term and long term solutions for anemia which the Ministry is ready to provide.

In order to decrease the high level of iron deficiency in the children, the Ministry has rolled out the National Iron and Micro Nutrition Supplement Program in 89 schools whereby they will give iron tablets to students.
