Amputations in Fiji on the increase

Fiji has one of the highest levels of Amputations in the world.

Dr Wahid Khan, Chairman of Diabetes Fiji says there is a need to increase awareness and improve front line medical staff dealing with diabetes management and non communicable diseases.

Diabetes Fiji and the Ministry of Health are working together to improve awareness and significantly reduce the worrying statistics.

“We have brought them to teach them and especially to train them and especially train them on diabetes foot care and all issues in relation to diabetes….the overall aim is to reduce the number of amputations that we are having at the moment you know..the statistics are showing there’s amputation every 12.6 hours now we have one of the highest levels of amputations in diabetes in the Western Pacific region where we belong to and it’s a shame”

Khan was speaking at 2 day workshop for medical practitioners – training on diabetes management.
