Alleged fake doctor remanded

October 5, 2015 12:53 am

A 51 year old man who is alleged to have been operating as a doctor without qualification and registration since 2014, has been remanded in custody.

Paramvir Maharaj of Omkar Road in Narere understood the charges when they were read to him in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

Maharaj is charged with one count of using the title “doctor” without being registered as a medical practitioner, contrary to Section 34 of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act.

He is also charged with one count of practicing and professing as a medical practitioner without being registered as a medical practitioner.

His third charge is one count of obtaining financial advantage where he allegedly took eight hundred dollars from one Barbara Begum.

The incident allegedly happened between the 6th to the 26th of last month.

Prosecutors objected to bail saying it’s a serious offence and Maharaj is likely to re-offend, interfere with witnesses and abscond bail because his family is overseas.

Defence Counsel Parmendra Kumar argued that his client had been in custody for more than 48 hours and had presented two sureties for bail.

However, Magistrate Sufia Hamza refused bail saying a proper bail application can be made with the support of affidavits while in remand.

Maharaj will re-appear in court on the 16th of this month.
