The seasonal work scheme in New Zealand has been labeled a success but it hasn’t been without challenges.
Deputy Secretary for Employment Vilimone Baledrokadroka has told FBC News that some of the Fijians were involved in binge drinking which led to the employer considering termination.
“They’re in New Zealand and you know they have the money with them, so we managed to resolve the issue, fortunately no one was sent home.”
He adds, some Fijians living in New Zealand also contributed to the issue by supplying the alcohol which resulted in the fallout and the Ministry having to intervene.
Under the contract between the Fiji nationals and the Ministry, alcohol consumption is prohibited.
Under the pilot program, 31 Fijians have been contracted to work in New Zealand for 7 months at a time.
Since leaving in February, the first 24 have returned with the final group to return in December.
