400,000 children, women and men in Fiji suffer from anaemia.

National Adviser for Non Communicable Disease Dr Isimeli Tukana says the rate is alarming.

Anaemia is caused by a lack of iron in the blood.

‘’In our statistic in Fiji it shows that a lot of people in Fiji are anemic, you need that particular iron rich food to be able to carry the oxygen to the tissues’’.

Dr Tukana says the Ministry is currently working on various ways to act against anaemia.

The Ministry is also calling on mothers to prevent anaemia by frequently breastfeeding babies in the first two years of life.
