AG slams Reconciliation Bill

July 15, 2018 7:16 pm

Reasons for trying to bring back the Reconciliation Bill by some Opposition Members is obvious.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the government knew why opposition members always raised questions about the bill as they wanted to see the release of certain inmates serving lifetime prison sentences.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the reconciliation bill will create a lot of disorder to the judicial system.

“It would have given the power to the state to interfere with any process before the courts if they felt it was going to bring about reconciliation, it would have meant that the state would be the executive and the will be given the authority to go and release people who are already in prison without going through the mercy commission and we know whom they want to release.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says the Reconciliation Bill was smoked and screened by the SDL government and it was created for a particular agenda.
