Indication of the election date draws closer as the Election Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Multi National Observer Group which is co-led by Australia, Indonesia and India.
Sayed-Khaiyum says these observers will also ensure that a free and fair elections is carried out.
In the 2014 General Election there were 92 observers from 15 countries and with terms of reference laid out for them, Sayed-Khaiyum says observers can come in early and also observe the process prior to the General Election.
“Some observers can also start coming in now to see the political climate the environment and mechanisms of different political parties and all of that.”
Electoral Commission Chair Suresh Chandra says the signing of the MOU with the observer group indicates the rounding up of all election preparation before the writ is announced.
