AG receives complaints about issuance of work permits

The Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says he has received complaints about the way the Immigration Department issues work permits.

Speaking at the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation Top Executive Conference on the Coral Coast last night, Sayed-Khaiyum said some complaints relate to the inability of Immigration Officers to understand which skilled people are needed and which ones are not required.

’’Government is at the moment working through some processes and some changes where we can have an input by people who understand the industry or who may understand the private sector a lot better as opposed to bureaucrats sitting down and making decisions about jobs and who we need and who we don’t need."

Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji has had a huge brain drain since 1987 and government is now trying to recoup some of that lost ground through initiatives like dual citizenship.

He adds this is in line with government’s efforts to create a knowledge- based society.
