Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today presented the first-ever Voluntary National Review on Sustainable Development in New York.
Sayed-Khaiyum says this was a great platform to discuss significant progress that Fiji has made in achieving a number of goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In his presentation, Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji as a small island developing state of few than a million people embraces its responsibility as a global citizen in promoting peace and passionately fighting for climate action.
He says remarks echoed by Lanieta Tuimabu on behalf of the Fiji Disabled Peoples Federation has made a great impact.
The AG says Tuimabu’s story is precisely the kind of tangible outcome that the United Nations works to achieve through its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
He adds Fiji being an inclusive country also looks at the protections of Fijians living with disabilities and translate them as contributors to nation-building.
The forum allowed Sayed-Khaiyum to advocate on changing the perception of girls in Fijian classrooms who can execute duties normally done by males.
Social issues such as domestic violence and gender inequality were also highlighted in his presentation.
Sayed-Khaiyum says Fijians need to start off their businesses and become successful entrepreneurs.
He also made a call to the UN system to provide cohesive support that will be needed to bring Fiji and other countries to the next level – economically, socially and environmentally.
