Administrators gather data on garbage collection

December 16, 2019 6:27 am

Contractors assigned to collect garbage in different municipalities will be taken to task in the near future for non-performance.

This comes as the special administrator teams are collecting data on waste collection.

Local Government Minister Premila Kumar says they often receive complaints from ratepayers that their garbage is not collected on time.

“We want to know in one area – the number of days the waste is collected from that area, whether the collection is done in-house of by a private sector. What is the cost? How much are we collecting? Is there any area where collection services are not provided?”

Kumar says it is important for ratepayers to have the right schedule for garbage collection.

“So we are trying to understand the whole works. Once we do that then we want to inform the public that if you leave in this area, the collection is done by a company called so and so and this company will be collecting your rubbish three times or four times a week or once a week through skip bins. But at least the ratepayers will come to know about it and they can monitor the performance of that company.”

Kumar says it is important to understand the different aspects of all municipal councils so they can improve on the services provided.
