The Acting Permanent Secretary for Sugar Parmesh Chand says Fiji continues to focus on reviving and developing the sugar cane industry.

Speaking at the 47th Session of the International Sugar Organisation in Antigua, Guatemala, Chand said four capital programs – cogeneration, ethanol production, sugar refinery and special sugar packaging are progressing well.

The four sugar mills in Fiji are estimated to crush 2.08m tonnes of cane and produce 232, 000 tonnes of sugar.

Chand says a team from the World Bank had been in Fiji exploring opportunities to identify development projects that could attract funding both for sugar and non-sugar agriculture sectors.

The next Council session will be held in London England, in November.
