Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar sworn in

Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar was officially sworn in by President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at the State House yesterday.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, former President and Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, members of the Judiciary and Kumar’s close family members.

Justice Kumar has served on Fiji’s High Court since 2013 and is the chairperson of the Human Right and Anti-Discrimination Commission.

Justice Kumar takes over from Chief Justice Anthony Gates who will be retiring after 11 years of service.

Anthony Gates was first appointed to the High Court of Fiji in 1999.

Gates was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice in 2007 before a substantive appointment as Fiji’s Chief Justice in 2008.
