With an increase of $700,000 in the national budget, the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji will use a portion of the allocation to address the high number of road fatalities.

Chief executive Parvez Akbar says through the campaign, they plan to look at issues like speeding, driver fatigue and motor vehicle safety.

He says apart from receiving and processing applications for compensation, the commission wants to play a proactive role.

“We have also seen from the accidents that pedestrians are running across the road and this is the issue. We would like to address and that’s where the road safety campaign comes in to create awareness and educate.”

Akbar says the commission has a budget of $1.7 million and so far has processed three death applications.

Two-hundred-and-twenty-five thousand dollars has been paid out as compensation.
