Separate drowning incidents claim two lives

A one-year-old boy and a 29-year-old woman are Fiji’s latest drowning victims.

Police say the one-year-old victim accompanied his father to their farm and while tending to their sheep, the child allegedly wandered off where he was later found floating in a fish pond.

The investigation continues into the incident.

Meanwhile, in the second incident, a 29-year-old woman from Gunusiwai settlement was last seen leaving her home to bath in the nearby river.

When she failed to return home, a search was conducted where she was found lying motionless near the Wainimala River at Botenaulu in Naitasiri.

Health officials have confirmed that the victim is a known epileptic patient, however, a post mortem will still be conducted to confirm the cause of her death.

The drowning death toll currently stands at nine compared to nine for the same period last year.
