The Consumer Watchdog has received seventy-six complaints on plastic bag levy since its implementation last year.

Consumer Council Project Manager Bindula Devi says it is shocking to note that some large traders are still making mistakes on the plastic bag levy.

“Traders without point of sale were charging plastic bag levy and there were cases where ten cents was paid by the consumers but it was not reflected in the receipts and the other issue is where more than ten cents was charged by the traders.”

The Council recently received a complaint whereby a consumer was charged twenty cents plastic bag levy before Government’s new financial year.

Devi says many traders implemented the increased levy of twenty cents straight after the new budget was announced however this is against the law as the changes will only be effective from August 1st.

The levy currently stands at ten cents.
