6 candidates from four parties disqualified

Six provisional candidates from four political parties have been disqualified for not meeting various candidate requirements.

Supervisor of Election Mohammed Saneem says the reason behind these candidates not qualifying, varies.

“FijiFirst” :Naziah Ali was not approved on the basis of not being in the country for a minimum of 18 months out of the two years immediately preceding the writ."
SODELPA :The nomination for Mr Adi Narayan has not been approved on the basis of non-confirmation of his status as it currently appears to be a dual citizenship."
NFP :The candidate Mr Feroz Mohammed was out of the country for a total of 222 days and as a result did not meet the requirement set out by the electoral act."
FLP :And three nominations have not been approved as the nominees has been found to have prior criminal convictions that disqualifies them under the electoral act."

Saneem says they will not name the three candidates in the Fiji Labour Party that did not make the cut due to the nature of the rejection.

He says that a total of 172 nominations have been approved between four parties.

This is 50 candidates each for FijiFirst, SODELPA, NFP and 22 candidates for FLP.

Saneem says other political parties have until midday tomorrow to submit their nominations and those who wish to appeal or object their nominations can do so on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, FijiFirst party General Secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they already have someone in mind to replace Naziah Ali.

NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad has mentioned that they also have a replacement for Feroz Mohammed and will be filing it tomorrow.

FLP General Secretary Aman Ravindra-Singh says they will see if they are able appeal the nominations of the three candidates however did not reveal their names.

Attempts to get comments from SODELPA General Secretary Adi Litia Qionibaravi on the next action they will take, proved futile.

Meanwhile, a total of 178 nominations were filed with the Fijian Elections Office.
