Fiji’s film sector accounted for thirty two million dollars of economic activity in 2014 with over fifty international productions filmed here in Fiji.

Trade Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali says the increase in productions are attributed to the attractive tax rebate of 47 percent.

Ali says Film Fiji is working on boosting the number of international productions not only to benefit the economy but to also assist Fijians with employment opportunities and to gain specialized skills.

“Things like airfares, insurance, location scouting and visit, costume, make-up and set design, producer’s fee and there’s a limit on that, writer’s fee. So basically anything that helps Fijian industry qualifies as a local content but with slight variation because productions are unique however, those will qualify for rebate.”

Ali adds while Fiji is an attractive destination competition from other tropic countries are tough.

The PS highlighted this information during a submission to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs yesterday.
