The Government is playing catch-up to bring roads, bridges and jetties up to internationally recognized standards.
Infrastructure Minister Jone Usamate says it will take a maximum of 10 years to achieve such standards.
Usamate says billions of dollars is needed to improve the national infrastructure.
“Overall assessment that is being done by FRA looking at the jetties, looking at the roads, the bridges, the crossings to maintain it over certain period of time goes up to 4 billion dollars.”
Usamate says underfunding, mismanagement and poor maintenance have left the current infrastructure below standard.
“We need to make sure that the way that we allow the people to use infrastructure is such that does not destroy it any further because the more the infrastructure gets destroyed the more money that we have to use.”
A forum was held at the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation yesterday allowing members to discuss transport and infrastructure issues affecting them.
