Despite the rent freeze order in place, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission continues to receive complaints in relation to illegal rent increase.
The Commission reveals it has received four hundred and forty-five complaints on illegal rent increase from 2017 to date.
FCCC Chief Executive, Joel Abraham says majority of the complaints regarding this issue are from rent on residential properties.
”Illegal rent increase , we got issues of non-issuance of receipts, non-issuance of agreements, non-refund of bonds so all these issues that were brought to us we have investigated some of the issues and out of them 31 matters are currently in court.”
Abraham says that some tenants lodge their complaints, however they refuse to cooperate with the Commission to carry out further investigation.
He adds that this is one of the issues faced by the commission
Meanwhile, the Consumer Council has received fifty one complaints on the similar issue in the last five years.
