400 Fijians to have land or house before year end

Assistant Minister for Housing Lorna Eden has confirmed four hundred Fijians will have land or a house before the end of 2015.

Supporting the 2016 budget Eden says close to 200 Fijians were supported through special interest rate discount programme and over 300 low income earning Fijians will benefit through affordable housing lots in Tacirua this year.

She adds $0.5m has been allocated to assist 100 financially disadvantaged housing Authority customers who are retirees, all those who are physically challenged or on medical grounds.

She adds in the last two years Public Rental Board (PRB) was allocated $8m for the provisions of affordable renting housing units for low income earners below the $10,400 threshold.

Eden adds that come 2016, the Government is providing a new allocation of $2.6 million to build rental flats to house 36 families to help meet the increased demand for PRB rental units.

Also a $1m rental subsidy grants will assist financially disadvantaged customers throughout the 24 housing states in the country.

Meanwhile the government allocated $5m to the squatter settlement upgrading programme in the last two years.
