More than 400 people die from smoking every year.
The Health Ministry says half of long-term smokers pass away through tobacco and half will die prematurely, losing 20–25 years of life.
Ministry Spokesperson Sunil Chandra says tobacco can lead to diseases such as cancer, heart-attack, high blood pressure, lower than average birth weight if people do not take precautions.
Chandra says the Ministry is putting more emphasis on awareness programme to fight smoking issues.
Meanwhile, 210 people have been charged so far this year for smoking in public places.
Those caught smoking in prohibited areas will be fined $200.00.
Business houses who sell single rolls will be fined $1000.00 when caught.
Enforcement officers have been mobilized in all the districts to conduct regular checkups and book people for breaching the Tobacco Decree
