The Social Welfare Ministry has identified over 3000 people who are no longer eligible to receive welfare assistance.

Permanent Secretary – Govind Sami says these applicants did not meet the existing social welfare criteria.

The Ministry carried out a review following recommendations by the World Bank Social Protection team.

The team has analysed that 28% of clients receiving social welfare assistance may not be in the poorest of the poor category.

Sami says this is why they reviewed all the 25,000 files with the Ministry.

He says they found that the economic circumstances of a large number of people have changed and as a result they no longer qualify for welfare assistance.

Clients who no longer qualify have been advised.
