A twenty-eight-year-old man who allegedly attempted to murder his partner by drowning her in Colo-i-Suva two weeks ago was further remanded in custody by the Suva High court.

It’s alleged that he pushed his partner into the water and tried to drown her at the Colo-i-Suva Park in Suva.

The court heard the two were in a relationship for nine months and that his partner had allegedly given him $78,700 which the accused agreed to pay on the 31st of last month.

It is alleged on the date of the incident, Padyachi initiated an early morning swim, insisting his partner accompany him to the popular swimming spot.

It’s also alleged that upon reaching the pool area, Padyachi pushed his partner into the water knowing that she could not swim.

When the accused saw her trying to swim to the banks, he allegedly jumped in and shoved her head deeper into the water while she struggled and grasped for air.

During the struggle, the victim allegedly scratched Padyachi’s face and was able to shout for help which was heard by a group of police officers who were trekking down the pool during their training.

Padyachi made a bail application which was strongly objected by the prosecution.

The prosecution informed the court that there is strong evidence against the accused as police officers were near the crime scene.

They also informed the court there is a possibility that the accused could interfere with the victim.

The prosecution has been given time until Friday to file their objection while the defence will file their response by Monday.

The matter has been adjourned to next Tuesday for bail hearing.
