26 injury and death compensation applications from schools

Twenty six injury and death compensation applications from schools have been received so far by the Accident Compensation Commission.

Speaking to principals yesterday during the Fiji Principal Association Conference, Chief Executive Parvez Akbar says these applications include 17 injury compensation applications and 9 compensation applications for death.

Akbar says they will thoroughly process the applications before any payouts are confirmed.

“If the accident, the injury or death, if it’s on school premises, then it has to be normal school hours, compensation will be payable, so the child is in school, it’s on school premises, it’s a normal school hours, school’s going on, there is an injury or a death, they will be entitled to compensation, so just to clarify if its school holidays, no compensation is payable.”

Akbar says the payout for death compensation is a fixed $75,000 whereas the injury compensation payout will be determined by the medical report provided.

He adds schools are responsible to notify the ACCF of any injuries and deaths of any students.
