The Lands Ministry is auditing lease records to get an accurate figure on monies owed to the State.
Lands Minister Ashneel Sudhakar says they estimate arrears to be around twenty-five million dollars however this is likely to change.
“There are some leases that have arrears for a number of years. People have neglected their leases, farms and moved on – they haven’t reported back to us. What we have also discovered that some leases have been further subdivided but the old leases have not been closed off. The old file also accumulates rent.”
