245 teaching positions filled

Two hundred and forty-five new teaching positions for primary, secondary and special schools have been filled.

Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum confirmed this in parliament this morning after Opposition MP Mikaele Leawere asked the Minister on the progress of the recruitment.

According to Leawere the Government had announced during the 2017/2018 national budget that 200 new primary school teachers and 50 new secondary school teachers would be recruited by the Ministry.

Sayed- Khaiyum says more than 200 positions have been filled.

“Out of the 200 new primary school teachers all two hundred positions have been filled, 189 have been posted to primary schools in different parts of the country. 11 of them have been posted to special schools as you know we have special schools in Fiji. And out of the 50 new secondary school teacher positions 45 positions have been filled. The other five has not been filled because they are specifically looking for teachers in specified areas in particular in the areas in particular in areas of Maths, physics, computer, biology, chemistry, home economics.”

Sayed Khaiyum says they hope to fill the remaining five vacant positions soon.
